Welcome to another edition of Mellow Mondays! Sorry for the late post, I expected to do next to nothing at work today, but I was actually pretty swamped all day. The theme of today’s post is this: how many songs into this post will TeeFizz’s head explode due to the lack of heavy bass, the predominant use of guitars, and, wait for it, even a song by his favorite rapper at the moment, Big Sean? Seeing as how I’m the one putting the post together, I say he lasts all the way til the glorious end with a Bonus Song from Big Sean and Kanye West. For those who are a little lost, let me fill in the gaps for you. TeeFizz hates white music. And by that, I mean anything with guitars, no rapping and lots of singing. To put it in simpler terms, remember that skit in the Chappelle Show where Dave takes John Mayer around to different spots in the city? The first couple spots, they go to a board meeting and a upscale restaurant where John rocks out on his electric guitar and everybody drops whatever they are doing and they start dancing around like hippies with no rhythm. Next, Dave takes John to a barber shop and as soon as he jams out, everybody inside continues cutting hair and gives him the stank-eye. That is what TeeFizz does whenever I play any “white music”. Well, today, I hope to reverse that trend. TeeFizz, this one’s for you buddy.
Star – Kidz In The Hall Ft. Tabi Bonney and One Chance
Let’s ease him into the post with a little rap. Kidz in the Hall is a group I’ve been following ever since my freshman year at Penn. These former Penn graduates have been on the scene for a minute now and they haven’t really received as much fan fare as I had anticipated when I first heard their debut album. They just released a mixtape called “Semester Abroad” and there are some solid songs on there. This one being my favorite of the bunch.
K. Flay continues to surprise me with the stuff she keeps putting out. I’m not usually a big fan of female rappers, but she manages to hold her on. She’s a little depressing, but her voice is distinct and her rhymes are solid.
I found this song trolling some blogs last week. It was a constant on my recent trip to DC this past weekend. Very catchy tune balanced with some nice vocals. First real test for TeeFizz here, heavily dependent on the guitar.
Hannah (Ra Ra Riot Remix) – Freelance Whales
At this point in the post, we find ourselves in the chill zone. I guarantee this will be viewed as unconscionably soft by TeeFizz but sometimes you’re just looking for some music to gently sooth you as you mindlessly go about your business. Right off the bat, you can tell it’s a light and breezy song that is gamely up for the task at hand.
We continue with a string of RAC, Remix Artist Collective, songs. Literally everything these two guys touch turns into gold. Their style reminds me of a toned down LCD Soundsystem. All their remixes delicately insert new and different sounds while preserving the integrity of the original and turning it into something entirely their own. Hopefully by the end of this post, you’ll recognize their immense talents.
Tonight’s The Kind Of Night (RAC Mix) – Noah and the Whale
Sweet Disposition (RAC Mix) – The Temper Trap
Something Good Can Work (RAC Remix) – Two Door Cinema Club
Houdini (RAC Remix) – Foster the People
High – Big Sean ft. Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang
Finally, we’ll wrap up this post with a couple Big Sean tracks off his upcoming Finally Famous CD. TeeFizz has made his distaste of Big Sean known to everybody who will listen to him. And to be honest, he raises some good points. Big Sean may be the most mediocre rapper out there with tight beats. At the end of the day, this song sounds more like a Chiddy Bang song so that may be why I like it. The other, more likely reason, is that I needed a new song to light up to.
Bonus Track:
Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay – Big Sean ft. Kanye West and Roscoe Dash
This song I know is not very good, but it’s been stuck in my head all weekend so I figure why not. Plus, I can hear TeeFizz’s eyeballs coming out of his sockets at this very moment. Enjoy!
